WHAT IS THE PATH

OF AWARENESS?

For Anita Hill, “family” began as her relationship with [Clarence] Thomas, who was not only a colleague, but a boss and a “father figure” to her and others. Thomas spoke of his supervisees as being like his “children,” and how he often had fatherly feelings for them. For such a “father” to betray his “child” is common in our world of unhealthy families. Anita Hill also has a greater family—in her workplace, and then finally in her government, where she and we encountered the unhealthy family of the Senate and its Judiciary Committee. And this Committee had a secret, likely only one among many more secrets, that it tried to keep from itself and the nation.

CHARLES WHITFIELD 1

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice and because we fail to notice that we fail to notice there is little we can do to change until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and desires.
